Buying Guide

A floor covering is a major part of any room, office, shop or staircase etc, not only do we have to look at it, we walk, sit, dance and drag things across it. The correctly selected floor-covering can make any space look and feel great, whereas the wrongly selected covering can be the complete opposite and be an expensive mistake.

There are many factors to take into account. More often than not it is down to design, durability and cost, and its worth putting these in order of importance.

To start the journey of selection, Interior design magazines and google images can be very useful. Have a search and get a feel for the look you are after.

The next step is to get in touch, let us know what you are thinking of and we will do our best to guide and advise on the most appropriate materials for your needs and and desires. If you call into our showroom and you have tiles, fabric or colours that are important to match with, bring them along if you can. You are always welcome to borrow sample’s to ensure  they work in the chosen location.

Here is a brief guide for the Home;

80% wool twists are always a favourite, they wear very well and clean easily. There are a number a stain-free man made carpets available, but they can flatten and look worn if the pile is not tightly woven. Some natural fibres can perform well, with Sisal small boucle and Coir boucle being the best. Pure wool loop pile carpets look great and can wear very well, just make sure the pile is tightly woven as longer looser loops can also look worn quite quickly. Runners can be very attractive for traditional and contemporary looks. We can cut and edge virtually any carpet to create runners. Roger Oates flat weave runners always make a staircase look amazing and can pattern match around winding stairs, whereas standard woven pattern / stripy carpets will not pattern match on winding stairs. There are ever increasing stripe carpets available, and a couple of great performing / looking stripe are Crucial Trading’s Mississippi and Alternative flooring’s Rock n Roll.

Kitchens and Bathrooms

Vinyl sheet is the cost effective option, and offers a huge array of designs and colours. Vinyl has come along way over recent years and the wood / stone effect have improved, along with many contemporary plain colours and stripes. For an arguably higher spec looking floor Amtico, Karndean and Moduleo offer realistic mock wood and stone along with mosaic and bold colours. All are hardwearing and easy to keep clean. Real wood can look great, but will need a lot of maintenance. Many other popular finishes for the kitchen and bathroom are Marmoleum, Rubber tiles and Harvey Maria tiles.

The choice here is endless, wood, natural fibres and endless styles of carpets all can look great and perform well.
